One of the anxious patients we recently treated at our hospital came with a swelling over his lower back.
He had first noticed it a few years ago. It was small, painless, and easy to ignore. Over the past several months, however, he felt it had started increasing in size. More importantly, it had begun affecting his daily life.
He enjoyed spending time in the park, but sitting against the hard backrest of the benches had become increasingly uncomfortable. The lump would press directly against the bench, making even a few minutes of sitting unpleasant.
His biggest concern, however, wasn't the discomfort.
It was cancer.
Like many patients, he had searched the internet, read conflicting information, and convinced himself that because the swelling was growing, it must be something serious.
After a detailed clinical examination, the swelling had all the characteristics of a lipoma. A benign fatty lump that develops beneath the skin. We explained why it was unlikely to be cancer, discussed the available treatment options, and recommended surgical removal because it had become symptomatic and was continuing to enlarge.
The procedure was performed as a short daycare surgery under local anaesthesia. The lipoma was removed completely through a small incision, and the patient was discharged the same day.
As with every lump we remove at our hospital, the specimen was sent for histopathological examination.
The biopsy confirmed exactly what we had expected.
A benign lipoma. No evidence of cancer.
For the patient, the surgery solved two problems at once. The discomfort while sitting disappeared, and so did the anxiety that had been weighing on him for months.
Can a Lipoma Turn Into Cancer?
This is one of the most common myths surrounding fatty lumps.
The answer is no.
A true lipoma is a benign tumour of fat cells. It does not transform into cancer over time.
That said, not every lump is a lipoma.
This is why every new or enlarging swelling deserves a proper surgical evaluation. While most soft, mobile, painless lumps are indeed lipomas, other conditions can sometimes appear similar. An experienced clinical examination, supported by imaging or biopsy when required, helps establish the correct diagnosis.
When Should You Consider Removing a Lipoma?
Although many lipomas can safely be observed, removal is often recommended when they:
Continue to increase in size
Cause pain or discomfort
Press against nearby muscles or nerves
Interfere with sitting, sleeping, or wearing clothing
Become cosmetically bothersome
Create uncertainty about the diagnosis
One Simple Rule
Don't panic, but don't ignore a lump either.
Most swellings we evaluate turn out to be completely benign. The goal is not to assume the worst, but to make the right diagnosis early and, when necessary, treat it with a straightforward procedure.
If you've noticed a lump that's growing, becoming uncomfortable, or simply causing you anxiety, the best next step isn't another internet search.
It's a proper evaluation by an experienced surgeon.
Sometimes, the greatest relief isn't just removing the lump.
It's removing the fear that comes with it.
From Diagnosis to Recovery: Complete Care for Lumps and Swellings at Surgery Central, Indirapuram
At Surgery Central, we offer comprehensive, end-to-end care for patients with lumps, swellings, cysts, lipomas, and soft tissue masses. Our goal is simple—to provide an accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and a smooth recovery, all under one roof.
Every patient begins with a thorough clinical evaluation. Depending on the nature of the swelling, we may recommend ultrasound, CT scan, or other imaging to understand its size, location, and relationship to surrounding structures.
When tissue diagnosis is required, we offer:
Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC)
Core Needle (Tru-Cut) Biopsy
We work with some of the most trusted pathology laboratories to ensure every biopsy is interpreted with the highest standards of accuracy. This allows us to plan the most appropriate treatment for each individual patient.
Once the diagnosis is established, we perform surgical removal whenever indicated. Many lumps—including lipomas, sebaceous cysts, epidermoid cysts, fibroadenomas, and other benign soft tissue swellings—can often be removed safely under local anaesthesia, allowing patients to avoid a hospital stay and return home comfortably on the very same day.
Our practice follows the principles of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS)—an evidence-based approach designed to minimise pain, reduce surgical stress, promote early mobilisation, and help patients recover faster. Whenever it is safe and appropriate, we encourage same-day discharge, allowing patients to heal in the comfort of their own homes.
Many of these day-care surgical procedures are covered under corporate health insurance and a number of private insurance plans, making high-quality surgical care both accessible and convenient.
Whether your swelling is small or large, recent or longstanding, our aim is to provide a seamless journey, from diagnosis to definitive treatment and recovery, with safety, precision, and compassion at every step.
