A young woman in her twenties walked into our hospital carrying much more than a breast lump.

She was carrying heartbreak.

During one of their intimate moments, her boyfriend felt a small lump in her breast. Both of them panicked.
Like millions of people do today, they searched the internet before speaking to a doctor.

Within minutes, they were reading about breast cancer.

Every article, every forum, every worst-case scenario seemed to convince them that this had to be cancer.
Over the following days, the fear grew. She told us her boyfriend became distant. Conversations changed. Plans for the future disappeared. Eventually, he told her he couldn't deal with the possibility that she had breast cancer.

He ended the relationship.

When she sat across from us in the consultation room, she wasn't crying because of the lump. She was crying because she believed she had lost both her health and the person she loved.

Her first question was simple. "Doctor... is it cancer?"

What We Found

After a breast examination, the lump had all the clinical features of a fibroadenoma, the most common benign breast lump seen in young women. A breast ultrasound supported the diagnosis. It was further confirmed with a tissue diagnosis. We call this Triple Assessment and it forms the current mainstay of breast lump diagnosis.

We explained something that every young woman deserves to know: The majority of breast lumps in young women are not breast cancer.

A fibroadenoma is a benign growth made up of normal fibrous and glandular breast tissue. It is not breast cancer, and a simple fibroadenoma does not turn into breast cancer.

The lump was causing significant anxiety and she wanted it removed. We proceeded with a low-scar breast lump excision as a daycare procedure and within 30 minutes her lump was gone.
The surgery was straightforward and as with every breast lump removed at our hospital, the specimen was sent for histopathological examination. A few days later, the biopsy report arrived.

Benign fibroadenoma. No evidence of cancer.

The diagnosis that had ended her relationship never actually existed.

The Part That Stayed With Me

As surgeons, we often remember difficult operations. I remember this consultation for a different reason. It reminded me how dangerous misinformation can be. Not because it changes a diagnosis but because it changes lives.
A breast lump should never be ignored but it should also never be assumed to be cancer.
